Hi Paul. Jo is a predominantly Japanese weapon. It is often associated with classical sword styles such as Shinto Muso Ryu. The jo was originally developed as a response to seemingly indomitable sword arts, which is why it is always a shade longer than the standard katana.

The Okinawans were also known to use a short bo called a hanbo, which is similar to a jo.
