It would be tough to say one is better than the other. The differences are mostly in taste. The string is generally seen as more traditional, but the chain gained a lot of popularity once Bruce Lee decided to use it.

The string is generally a little quieter and smoother on the spin, and there are also repair kits available for string.

String is actually 0.5x faster than chain, because string has less resistence and string chakus traditionally were made smaller than those chains. To my opinion, string is better for carry and real fight, while chain is better for practise.

the string is weaker than the chain, so if ypu break them you need to repair twice as much than the chain.
