The difference between octagon and round is essentially one of taste. There is no real performance difference in regards to blocking, striking, or durability. It really depends on which feel you like better.

Although in combat applications; the octagons have multiple corner edges, which in a strike will make for cutting edges. Then in the other direction regular chucks are just blunt and solid...like mini baseball bats. Both will do significant damage but the octagons will add the cutting factor to it!
