Escrima Sticks, used in a variety of Filipino martial arts such as Kali and Arnis, are traditionally crafted from the rattan vine. They can be made to a variety of lengths, though the standard size is 26" to 28".
How come Escrima Sticks are not sold in pairs?
There are many different Escrima arts. Some use two sticks, some use only one stick, some even use one stick and one knife, others still use a cane and an Escrima Stick. It is for this reason that most retailers and schools sell Escrima Sticks individually.
What size Escrima Stick do I need?
With so many different varieties of martial arts that use Escrima Sticks, there really isn't an answer to this question, however, the most Escrima sticks are between 26" and 28" long with a diameter of 1" to 1 1/4". A good thing to do would be to ask your instructor exactly what length he considers appropriate for his class, or if you have been practicing with Escrima sticks, go with what you are comfortable using.
What kind of Escrima Stick is right for me?
Before choosing an Escrima Stick it is important to consider what you'll be using the Esrima Sticks for.
For Demonstration:
For demonstration lighter weight sticks are preferred. Some martial artists choose sticks with designs or reflective material on them, adding flash to their performance.

For combat practice:
In combat practice situations foam padded Escrima sticks are generally used. The foam padding protects both the user and his or her sparring partner from harmful impacts during intensive training. Foam padded Escrima Sticks are usually the same length and weight as regular Escrima Sticks

For strength and speed development:
To develop muscle strength and increase speed, using an Escrima Stick made from a heavier wood, such as hickory is recommended. Doing so will increase your strength and acclimate you to heavier sticks, then when you switch to a lighter stick for demonstrations or sparring, you will naturally move faster.
