The interior padding is gel construction which has been proven highly effective at dispersing impact.     I'd recommend taking into consideration your typical clothing size. Medium/large shirts, etc. and go from there. You can also check out the adidas pad: pr-ke-42 and use the measuring chart at the bottom of that page to help your general idea of what you might be.
