When holding the sword with the right hand up near the tsuba (hand guard) and the left hand low, the mekugi pin tends to be near the index or middle finger on the right hand.

Loose part

Hello, A few weeks ago I bought a samurai sword similar to this one and after cutting a whole lot of plastic water bottles, the guard of the sword got a bit loose. Is there any way for me to tighten the guard without spending any money or do I have to have a blacksmith look at it?

Hi Phantox. The first thing you'll want to do is take a look at your mekugi pin. This is the small wooden pin in your sword's handle (tsuka) that holds the handle and sword tang together. Examine that and make sure it is inserted fully and securely. When this loosens it can make the handle lax off of the guard (tsuba), which in turn can cause it to rattle.

If that seems to be in order, you can use leather or soft plastic to create a seppa, or spacer as seen here: http://www.ricecracker.com/inventory/747_daisho_mon/747_daisho_mon_seppa.jpg. If you wanted to spend a little money, you could buy a seppa.

If you are uncomfortable with taking apart the sword and checking the mekugi or adding a seppa, consult your kenjutsu instructor for advice and guidance.

Real Blade?

Is the sword full tang? is it really a weapon, or is it merely decorative?

This sword is more for decoration or iaido practice, rather than real cutting.
