Originally derived from Okinawan millstone handles, the Tonfa have evolved into formidable weapons renowned for their speed and versatility.
Why get a Tonfa?
Tonfa are used in pairs to teach coordination for hand to hand fighting, build up speed, reflexes and confidence, and to get conditioned for the impact of other weapons. They are also used for defense against a wide variety of weapons from swords to Bo staffs
What length Tonfa do I need?
The Tonfa's length is important to the safety of both you and your sparring partner. As a general rule it should not extend more than one inch past your elbow when gripped. A good way to measure is to measure from the tip of the extended index finger to the end of the bent elbow. Then subtract 1/2 inch. This is the perfect Tonfa length!
What Tonfa is right for me?
That depends on what you intend to use it for.
For Demonstration:
For demos a light, smooth and round Tonfa is preferred. You may also want to consider a tapered end. All of these features will contribute to faster rotational velocities and smoother turns. See the KD Elite Black Tonfa
For combat practice:
In combat practice situations thicker squared off Tonfa with tapered ends are used. The square edges help in blocking and deflecting while the tapered edges reduce the chance of hitting your wrists while spinning the Tonfa. See the Tapered Square Tonfa
For strength and speed development:
Heavier wood, such as the red oak, and bulkier square designs are preferred in training to increase strength stamina and speed. See the Red Oak Tonfa.
