Exploring Different Gi Weights (Pros and Cons of Each)

The host uses a cotton T Shirt, lightweight gi (8oz) and heavyweight gi (14oz) to demonstrate the practical and performance differences of different gi weights.

The size of a gi is only one metric you'll have to choose in order to get the best one for your needs. The weight of a gi (measured in ounces) will dictate the heaviness of the material and the general stitch count. Choosing the right one can affect your comfort and performance.

I would highly recommend the middleweight (8.5). The only thing I was disappointed in is that I was in between sizes. I am 5'5" and weigh 166 lbs which would not put me at exactly 3 but more at a 3 and a half. Anyway, after extensively reading all the reviews about sizes, quality etc. Unfortunately, I did not follow my gut feeling and went ahead and purchased a size 5; it goes without saying that this uniform was gigantic on me even after I washed and dried it a few times. With that said I decided that I would go with my first instinct and order the size 3 and boy I am I happy that I did. The jacket fits great and the pants fits perfectly (I could do with an inch or two in the waistline); nonetheless, this uniform gets two thumbs up... way up. The KD brand is my first gi and I am so pleased that I choose this brand because the 8.5 quality is superb and have minimal to no shrinkage once washed in cold water and line dried.

I cannot find this to be possible. My son is 10 years old and is approximatle 4'10 and weights 105lbs and a size 3 was too small for him. I find it hard to believe that at a size 3 fits a 166lb adult. Maybe these gi's are produced differently but I find them to run extremely small. I absolutely love the gi however.

First Gi

This gi fits comfortably and serves its purpose in helping you to break a sweat, while wearing it. The quality is decent and you can't beat the price! The only con would be that you may have to shorten the length of the gi pants and gi top arms. I would recommend this to any furst time buyer!

I ordered one for myself and my son.

I ordered a 5 for me and a 00 for my 5 year old. I tried mine on and found it is narrow (not wide enough) around my torso. I'm a bit thick in the trunk so I figured I probably should have ordered a size 6 top. However when my son tried his on he had the same issue when tying the top together it would be too snug around his middle and he is NOT thick around the middle at all.

I'm 5 foot 9 inches & 210 LBs so I ordered my size exactly. The jacket is long enough and the pants are a bit too long but can be tailored. I'm going to try a Size 6 top and Size 4 pants to see how that combo works for me. Either way I'll have to get my Gi (any brand I get) tailored a bit as I've got a bit of a long torso and short-ish legs.

This was the first gi I purchased from Karate Depot. It is now a year old and still in excellent condition despite frequent use and washings! It is very nice quality for everyday use. Sizing chart was right on target. Thanks for a great product.

This has to be one of the best semi-medium weight uniforms I have ever used. I use this particular model for all of our students. It gives them a sturdy uniform at a very good price that will last as opposed to the cheapies many schools use. Some of our uniforms have frayed a bit but I think that's more because of our washing method as opposed to the uniform material or quality being bad. Make sure to wash in cold water and let it air dry. I always iron out the creases and it holds a good press. One complaint I have: if you normally wear a 5, get a 6. They are cut a little bit differently. So get one size higher and you should be fine (tailor to fit). I have no complaints on the pants.

This gi was much more than I expected for the price. It was quite large-fitting when new but after washing (in cold water) and drying it shrunk to a perfect fit. I'm slim (5'11; 150 lbs.) and a size 5 fits perfectly. I was concerned that a cotton blend fabric would be uncomfortable, but this gi is more comfortable than the heavy 100% cotton canvas gi it replaces. It feels heavier than the 8.5 oz. weight suggests and holds it shape well. It doesn't feel like a cheap, lightweight gi and has a nice drape over the body. It's too early to comment about durability. The white belt that came with it is thin and cheap.

Coming from a Century middleweight uniform that cost me $49.95, I was expecting lesser quality. After about a week, if anything the quality of the KD Elite uniform is better and the material is a little heavier, which I like.

I had previously purchased a karate uniform for my daughter, and had selected the Macho brand. After receiving the uniform, I compared it to what other' were wearing, and was impressed with Macho's quality; so much so that when it came time to purchase a uniform for my wife, I went directly to the Macho selection. For the price, you cannot beat the quality.

Not as heavy as I hoped.

Good quality for the money. Fabric not as heavy as I hoped and gi bottoms are not long enough but going to the next size would have made them too large in the waist and legs. I will keep the purchase.

Hi Nir. Some uniforms are 100% cotton, but this one is a 55/45 cotton polyester blend. For shipping estimates, add the item to your cart and go to 'checkout'. Before having to pay you will get to add your address and see possible shipping options.

It sounds like he is at a good weight for a 2, but would require a bump up to 3 due to his height. Especially if you want to compensate for a little shrinking in the wash.

I don't have a specific restock time for you at the moment.

Good quality uniform

I like this uniform very much. Not too heavy, well finished. The price was reasonable.
The size 1 fits my average-size 9-year-old son very well. Sleeves and pants are exactly the right length, and the pants have some extra room in the waistband, so they would also fit a husky child.

Hi douds. A size 4 would be form fitting for you. You wouldn't be able to allow shrinkage in the wash (which means you would need to do cold wash, hang dry). A size 5 would be a looser fit and would allow for some wash shrinking, although you might need to cuff the sleeves and pant legs once or twice.

Hey Kaan. You could fit a size 4 but you would have no room for shrinking in the wash, which means you'd have to be very careful to do cold wash and hang dry. I would probably recommend a 5 which might require a cuff of the pant legs and sleeves but would also provide some room for shrinking.

I am 5'8" and 170 lbs so normaly I would get a size 4 however the pants on the size 4 are too short and when I got the pants in a size 5 the length was better but far to big around the waist and hips. What size should I get?

I size 4 is going to be best for his height, although he'll feel like he is swimming in it a bit. If you go 3 he will have slightly short pant legs and sleeves but it will be a better fit.

I would probably recommend going 4 and using some strategic washer/dryer shrinking.

I'm 5'5" and weight about 120. I have a size 3 and the pants fit good but the jacket is a little short in the sleeves and length. How much larger is a size 4? I'm worried that a size 4 pants will be too big

A good option for you would be to get a size 4 jacket separately. This one here - un-md-17, is the exact same material weight and color.

Even if the jacket is a bit big, you can strategically shrink it in the wash.

I didn't give 5 stars only because we haven't had the Gi long enough to test its durability but I think its safe to assume it will hold up fine. Great fit for my kid, good weight. Not to heavy but not so thin it clings. Great gi I'm very happy with this purchase as is my kid. He is at an intermediate level and needed a step up from a starter gi and this is just right.

Sizing

I am 5'8" and weigh 190 lbs. I can't decide whether the 4 or 5 is a good size for this uniform (I'm a 'tweener I guess). I previously bought a size 5 KD Elite uniform and the pants were too big and then bought a size 4 to get the smaller pants. I never tried shrinking the pants but would this work if I bought the size 5?

Thanks,

Hi Jason. Since these uniforms have a percentage of cotton, you could definitely get some shrinking if you utilized hot wash and spin dry. In addition, you could shop for individually sold gi tops and pants so that you can mix the sizes to your liking - un-md-17, un-st-12.

Hi TJ. If it is indeed Taekwondo then you'll likely want a uniform like this one: un-ta-001. However some varieties of Tang Soo Do, and most karate, use uniforms like this: un-st-10.

If you aren't certain which you need, you'll want to consult the instructor of your soon-to-be school.

Size?

I have and 7 and an 8 yr old. Both are tall for their age. My 7 yr old is a few inches shorter than my 8 yr old. My 8 yr old weighs about 60 lbs and my 7 yr old weighs 45 lbs. They are both pretty skinny! (Thank GOD for elastic waists!). What size should I get for them? I am not quite sure how tall they are but I know they are both atleast 4"... I don't see any kind of growth spurt coming anytime soon, so I don't think I want to get them too big (they are going to need to be able to wear them now). HELP!

Hey Ctay. You're right - you're perfectly suited for a size 5 in height, but best matched to a size 4 in weight.

If you go 4, the cut will be more form fitting but you'll have sleeves and pant legs just shy of full length. IF you go 5, you'll have full length sleeves and legs (maybe even 1 cuff), but it will also be more material draped on you.

Great Product

This is the second uniform purchased from Karate Depot. This is a good company with great products. My son was 10 when we purchased his first uniform. It served him well for 2 years and still has a lot of life left in it. It will be passed on to another student. He's 12 now and I'm sure that this uniform will serve him just as well.

It is well made and of quality material.

Will be ordering again in about a year (he is growing fast).

Hey Voidis. If you are going to be doing both grappling and striking, check out this little video: http://www.karatedepot.com/video-14-The-Difference-Between-Uniform-Types.html. It explains some of the important differences in uniform types for each kind of activity.

As for size, I think you could fit into a size 5, and be comfortable (with a little extra room) in a size 6.

nice uniform

this is a well built and comfortable uniform. I thought is was a traditional drawstring waist but it is elastic with a drawstring. Only reason I'm giving it a four star instead of 5. The product description needs to be more accurate.

New shipment will be arriving in about 2 months. We intend to continue this sale for awhile, most likely even after the new shipment arrives. However after the sale expires the price will be returned to normal for all orders.

seems good size small?

ordered 2 of these and 2 of the lightweight ones for the whole family. I previously bought the lightweight ones for the kids. They are of good quality and wear and wash well the lightweight ones iron well also. Everyone got a great fit based on the chart (sizes 1,2 and 4, except me. I ordered size 8 based on the measurements chart but the jacket doesn't even meet in front. pants fit ok but the jacket is about 10 inches away from fitting. Unfortunately since I am outside the US it would be way too expensive to return it and pay shipping, duty etc hoping the size 9 would be better. Despite that the products and service are great, received my items in just about 3 days i think. I guess I can order a jacket when funds allow.

Outstanding

My son had a KD uniform for his first GI, he out grew it very fast so I had to order up a new one. The KD's were out of stock and I'm glad they were. This one is lighter and just has an all around better look and feel.

Hi Pj Ninja. If he is just getting done with a growth spurt, go with #2. If you suspect another one is coming, go with #3.

Better than I expected

I've practice martial arts for almost 30 years and have hundreds of dollars for name brand gis. I purchased 2 for my kids and used the site's sizing guide to estimate and held my breath that they would fit. The quality of the gi was VERY impressive and the sizing gave the kids a bit of room to grow. Highly recommend this low price gi for adults AND kids! MLM- San Diego

Exactly what I needed.

I ordered this gi because I decided I was going to continue karate. I took my first few months worth of classes in T-shirts and loose pants because my sensei didn't mind, and I didn't want to spend money on a gi if I wasn't going to continue. Well I was afraid switching over the heavier gi would make things harder, but instead it's been really helpful. This gi fits great, and helps my movements. For those interested in sizing, I'm 5'1, and about 140lb, and my three fits me perfectly, except that I may could stand to hem my pants some. I would recommend this to anyone.

Good Gi!

I ordered this recently, and haven't had time to use it much yet, but when I wore it to class the other day, was surprised when the instructor called me out saying that my punches and kicks were quick, as she was noting the "snap" from the gi. I'm just a beginner, doing this with my kids, but having a comfortable, well-made gi makes all the difference. I hate poor quality stuff, and I'm very pleased with this uniform!

Good Quality

My Boyfriend & I got this Gi instead of the ones offered by our Sensei. He recomended looking online for better quality and we found it. THe run a bit big but the quality is worth it. It didnt shrink much in the wash even after the attempts to do so. I am 5'6 & 158lbs and found them to be a big large round waist. I will surely order it again especially being a girl needing it to not be as see through as the previous ones.

Great quality Gi at a bargain price

This is my first gi, and so far it's holding up fairly well. At the recommendation of okiken108 I decided to go ahead an order a size 5 since I'm 5'9" but weighed over 220 lbs. Despite my weight, the gi fits me perfectly, except the pants and sleeves are a bit too long, but nothing a bit of hemming can't fix. If you're considering buying this gi for yourself, your students or a gift, I would highly recommend this gi. I doubt they, or you, will be disappointed.

Sizing?

Alright, I'm 5' 9 1/2" and about 244 pounds; what Gi size should I go with? I've also got a pretty broad chest too, so I'm trying to decide between the 5 and the 6, any suggestions?

Size suggestion?

I am 6' and 273 pounds. I am a beginner and I ordered the Elite Judo uniform in a size 7 and it is too big. After seeing the uniform I have decided it is too heavy anyway for a beginner so I am going to return it and try this one. I have also tried the lightweight beginner uniform and it is too thin and almost see through. It seems this uniform is the best choice for me. Any size suggestions for me? Thank You!

Hey wrecksrme, I think we can get you straightened away! First question - what style of martial art are you studying? If it is judo, as your first uniform selection would suggest, you might not want to switch over to a karate uniform. The material used in karate uniforms is not as optimally suited to the grabbing and pulling done repetitively in judo. Also karate uniforms have tie tabs on the inside which you don't want for a predominantly throwing art.

The Elite Judo gi is a double weave style, so since that was a bit too heavy I recommend dropping down to the single weave here: un-ju-14. This is a great middle ground between the lightweight beginner uniform and a thick elite gi.

If the size 7 was too big I would drop down a size to 6 and then expect a little shrinking when you put it through the wash. Hot water, hang dry.

A size #4 would be more reasonable length-wise but might be a bit snug around the waist. A size #5 is your safest bet but will probably require a bit of cuffing or hemming on your part.

Much for Your Money

I ordered a size 5 of this gi (although I should have gone with 4, I now realize), because I feared the pants would shrink a lot in terms of length... When I received the size 5 gi, I measured the length of the pants: 109 cm. Then I washed it several times, and used it a few times in between. (I tried washing it in 30 degrees Celsius, then 40, then 60, but now I'm sticking with 30 and 40. Just wanted to get the shrinking phase over with). Now the pants are 106 cm long. If any of you are interested, I made a picture with more detailed measurements here (I do hope the link will show): http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/4961443044_7a547867ed_b.jpg

Unlike my previous gi, this gi stays in place, it's not heavy and doesn't hinder my movements, and it doesn't shrink much. Feels like soft cotton, if you're one to prefer that. It may be a LITTLE bit see-through, but not any more than other uniforms. It's easily fixed: just wear white underwear. ;)

I think a size #4 would work nicely, unless you'd like a little room for growth as he gets older. In that case, go with the size #5 and just cuff up the sleeves and legs.

Hi Millie. Try the size #7 uniform. It should fit comfortably and snugly around the waist. You'll likely have to cuff the sleeves and pants one or two times, but that's fairly normal for karate uniforms.

What Size

I'm gonna be starting karate in a few months and would like to know what size uniform i should get. I don't really fit any of the categories on the size chart. I'm 5'10" or 5'11" and weigh 300 pounds. What do you recommend?
by: Katie

Hi Katie. I would recommend getting a size 7 and the cuffing the arms and legs (since they are likely to be a bit long). Cuffing your uniform is a pretty common practice.

When you first get your uniform, its going to feel a bit weird but you'll get used to it.
