Hi CC. I would recommend getting a 6 foot straight hardwood bo. Then you can cut it down to about 5'5". It's tougher to do that with a tapered bo since you have to cut down equally on both sides to maintain balance.

Hi, i used to take karate a few years ago and want to start back with practicing my skills on my own what size Bo should i get im 6'1". I also plan to go with the tapered for thats what i used when i took the classes which wood be the best durable but not too heavy of a bow and should i go to a straight Bo now that i hit alot harder about three times as strong as i was then because of taking lots of weight training classes in high school.

Hi Jon. You'll want to go with the 6 foot bo. I should suit your needs just fine. As for wood, the tapered hardwood should get you where you're going -
wp-bo-04
.
As for taper vs nontaper - that should matter too much. Remember, this weapon might break if you treat it like a baseball bat, regardless of taper.

Hi Kristian. I'm going to assume you are just starting out with the bo (let me know if I'm wrong). A bo that is a good balance between easy-to-use and durable would be this one:

Bo selection
He is incorrect and gives me the impression that he doesn't study at a traditional Okinawan weapons school, where the use of the bo originated. Therefore, he doesn't know the needs of another practitioner. Buy your stuff here but try the link below:

Hey Joel! Nishiuichi is fantastic - I think everyone who stumbles onto my video here should also watch the video you suggest.
I doubt I'll ever be at Nishiuchi Sensei's level, although I'll continue to try and improve.
Your impression of my background however is not correct. If needed, you can read more about me here -
