The size of a gi is only one metric you'll have to choose in order to get the best one for your needs. The weight of a gi (measured in ounces) will dictate the heaviness of the material and the general stitch count. Choosing the right one can affect your comfort and performance.

Useful Info on Size and Buttons

100% Cotton Kung Fu Uniform

Some customers have experienced a little trouble at first with the buttons. When you first receive the uniform the material can be quite stiff simply from the newness and packaging. The cloth tabs can feel tight when trying to slip them through the opposing loops. After a few uses and washes though this will loosen up for you and feel great.

If you are on the fence about size, you can probably order safely a size smaller than you might think you need. For example, I am 5'10" and 150 and I can comfortably fit in both medium and large.

Sparring Shoes *CLOSEOUT*

Although these are called sparring shoes, I have found that they are most useful for me in a variety of other ways. During long days at the dojo or at a tournament, I've found (as has many other people) that bare feet can make you cold and stiff and sore. These shoes are perfect to slip on as they are very dojo-floor safe. They are comfortable and well paded, making the support provided very valuable as the day goes on. Unfortunately, they are sometimes flagged during official sparring competitions as they are rather firm, especially in the sole region.

This set, although not particularly glamourous or eye-catching, is a very good and attractive set. It can take plenty of abuse and is made to deal with strikes from a shinai, or bamboo sword. Be careful about the glove size and make sure it covers your palms properly - also expect (And want) the helmet to be snug.

double weave worth it

Double Weave White BJJ Uniform

If you're wondering whether to go with the single or double weave, it is my opinion that the double weave is worth the slight jump in price point. Jujitsu is a demanding art on uniforms and the more stitching you can get the better. Pushing, pulling, and tugging all serve to loosen up hems. I think you'll find this style to be more than adequate for your needs.

good for kids

Children's Elastic Waist Judo Uniform

This product was designed for children and I think that shows. The ease of use is something that is very noteworthy, as children need something uncomplicated and unlikely to malfunction during practice. They will also need something tough and tumble (for both in the dojo and out), and this fits the bill.

attractive design

Poom Do Bok

This uniform features a very sharp design. The quality of the make is good and it looks good in action. It includes the traditional v neck and also a flag patch. Very light, airy, and especially good for beginners.

Adidas Grandmaster Uniform

From the people who have owed this uniform, I have only heard good things. Adidas is a big brand that puts their name on the line for products like this, and it is good to see that they haven't skimped on the quality. It is very sharp looking and optimally cut for TKD performance.

A bit unusual

Middleweight Pro Pant

These pants seem to follow the 70's style uniform. By that I mean they are tighter around the thighs and feature a lace-up front. Most uniforms don't have these characteristics, but there was a time in the 70's when this was prevalent (and there were much wider bell bottoms too). If this appeals to you, go for it, just know that what you are getting isn't typically 'the norm'.

soft but still substantial

14oz. White Ultra Heavyweight Karate Uniform

It some point in their careers many martial artists feel as if their gi isn't quite meaty enough. They want something with a little more pop and substance. This gi is perfect for that sort of thing. The weight provides great snap, but isn't immovably stiff and uncomfortable. The brushed cotton makes it a breeze to wear.

14oz. Black Ultra Heavyweight Karate Uniform *CLOSEOUT*

The great thing about this uniform is the level of responsiveness you get that you simply can't achieve with 8 oz uniforms. The heaviness might seem a little overbearing to some people, especially during extended workouts. However, it is optimal for demonstration and event purposes.

my main uniform

Elite Heavyweight Karate Uniform

The KD Elite heavyweight gi is my main gi of choice. This is the one I wear to all of the formal events I attend, and use it only a weekly basis as well. The fabric is much more comfortably than some other brands I have tried, and still provides excellent response to techniques.

This will arrive in a traditional cut.

I've noticed that color fade in not just this uniform, but many black uniforms in general. One thing I have done to reduce that is a.)only wash when necessary, and have other gi's in rotation, b.) use black-fabric-specific detergent to try and preserve the color. So far this strategy has worked well for me.

Yes the fabric is definitely going to seem unusual at first, especially when you take it fresh out of the packaging. In a short amount of time though it will loosen up and become very pliable. In fact, I bet that after a few years your daughter will want a thicker fabric so that she gets a more tactile response during her techniques. But, for now, this should do nicely!

10oz. White Traditional Heavyweight Karate Uniform

Yes ironing is almost impossible get away from. If you want the least amount of ironing possible, go with a black, light weight gi. The heavier you go and especially with white uniforms, the more ironing required.

As for the colorations - certain gi are bleached very white, and others have a more natural (off white) color. It's tough to tell off of pictures which will be which, but sometimes it is specified in the item descriptors.

Hey Nick, you can definitely punch and block with these gloves as well. They have good durability for all of those activities. 10" Studded Competition Kamas

These kama are generally not razor sharp as they are more for demonstration. That being said, it is still important to be safe when handling them as they are still metallic and by no means rounded. As for durability - these are focused more on lightness and enhancing showmanship rather than being able to take active bunkai or cutting demonstrations. These are more 'tournament' oriented rather than application oriented.

Answer to: what is stronger the shirasaya sword or the traditional sword
Shirasaya Samurai Sword *CLOSEOUT*

Both Shirasaya and traditional katana at this price point are for display purposes only. That being the case, neither would be able to withstand significant abuse. They are best used for display or practice cuts in the air. If you are looking for a sword that can withstand cutting and blocking, you'll have to invest a bit more financially. Those higher quality swords are made of more durable metal and contain a tang that extends all the way down into the tsuka (handle). When made for cutting, both Shirasaya swords and traditional katana are roughly the same in durability, although the traditional katana contains a tsuba, which is a handguard.

The fighting fan is a versatile weapon that can be used both open and closed. When closed, it creates a durable thrusting weapon to the face, eyes, etc. When open it can be used to distract and disorient attackers. The benefit of the fighting fan is that it can be carried without being obvious as a weapon. To learn more about using the fan properly, consult a skilled instructor in your area.

Answer to: If my daughter is 5' 2", what size of these black Sais are best to get?
Black Sais

The most fool proof way to get a correct sai measurement is to go to your training facility and ask to see some pairs there. Have your daughter hold the sai with the blade edge pointing down toward her elbow. The point of the sai should be just about at her elbow. Once you find the sai that fits that criteria, you can ask what the size is or measure it yourself.

That really depends on the length of your arms. Taller people tend to use the longer variety, while shorter people find the 8" more manageable. From a performance perspective, the shorter ones are quicker to spin. From an application perspective, the longer kind gives you added reach on a weapon that is short by nature.

Hey Lu - You could definitely fit sparring gear in here with weapons. The big question will be how many weapons you'll intend to carry around. If it gets to be more than a few you'll start running into space issues, especially with larger sparring gear pieces like headgear.

White Wax Tapered Bo

Even for beginners it's mostly just a personal preference. The white wax is nice and light but tends to absorb less sweat on the hands. If you want something easy to handle, white wax or rattan is nice. For something that has a little more body and can take a hit, go with hardwood.

Complete Middleweight Traditional Uniform

Hey Brandon - Yes your gi is going to be baggier than clothes you are used to. If you find that the pants or sleeves are a bit long, you can simply cuff them back once or twice. This will also give you some flexibility in case it shrinks a little in the wash. Since this is not a 100% cotton uniform, you can expect minimal shrinking.

Answer to: Hi Just starting out at 52 never used them before looks like in need 14 inch set. are there any . . .
Octagon Cord Nunchucks

Hi JC - it's great to hear that you are jumping into the nunchaku. Although there are no nunchaku that come with a dvd helper, there are some resources out there for you to consider. Two excellent choices include "Okinawan Kobudo: Nunchaku" (http://www.amazon.com/Nunchaku-Weapon-Okinawa-George-Alexander/dp/B00007MEYY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1268078671&sr=8-5), and "Nunchaku: Karate Weapon Of Self Defense" (http://www.amazon.com/Nunchaku-Karate-Weapon-Self-Defense-Demura/dp/B000FLTRMQ/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1268078671&sr=8-9).

Here are a few tidbits to help you get going though - many beginners enjoy using foam nunchaku as it helps reduce injury. The dynamics of this weapon often lead to little bumps and bruises and using a foam pair eliminates potential for injury. However, too much reliance on foam nunchaku will ultimately detriment your ability to use real wooden nunchaku, as wood behaves differently and must be handled differently.

When it comes to chain or rope - rope is generally considered the more traditional of the two, however many people enjoy chain (Especially since its popularization by Bruce Lee). Rope can be more easily replaced if it wears out. The length of that cord or chain should be roughly four fingers across (should be just long enough to dangle across your open pal with extra rope). Some people use shorter rope than that to increase their spin speed, but sacrifice a lot of practical application and weapon length.

Eight Piece Ninja Warrior Sword

Vale - It is recommended that after you cut with the blade, or make contact with it, you should clean and re-oil it. The oils from your skin can cause it to spider rust. As for tamashigiri - I would be cautious when pursuing cutting because it only has a half tang construction. Most swords at this price point are for training and demonstration rather than hard core cutting.

The padding used to keep your legs in place will put some small pressure on the knees and other areas of the leg, but as long as you build up slowly and dont push too far passed your comfort point you should be fine.

If you have an existing knee injury, please consult with a doctor or physical therapist before engaging in this kind of activity (you don't want to risk re-injury!).

Answer to: At our studio we must break a pine board that is 12in x 12in x 1 inch thick. My son . . .
Rebreakable Boards

Jen - if you are looking for a 1 inch thick board you would want the green belt option. "1.75" does indeed mean 1.75 inches thick, but don't bethrown by the color gradings - it's not necessary for all brown belts to break the brown belt board, it's just a clever way to name them.

If I could make a suggestion: try to refrain from having your son do breaking at such a young age. Children's bones are in a state of development at that point and aren't adequately hardened to withstand that kind of punishment. If breaking is required for black belt, just have him wait for a few more years to achieve it. Black belt will also mean more to him when he is old enough to appreciate all the implications that come with having a black belt.

Answer to: whats the difference between the tapered and non-tapered bo staffs?
Tapered Hardwood Bo

Hey Jimmy - tapered bos are generally considered better for spinning. The taper makes the ends light and places the center of gravity more dominantly in the middle. Non-tapered bos are considered better for application and bunkai (meaning they can take better beatings because they are thicker). Of course, that is also relevant to wood type. If you want something specific for competitions, taper might be the way to go. If you intend to pursue bunkai and kobudo kumite, go with non-taper.

Answer to: how do you keep the scabbard in the ninja belt. I have the authentic ninja uniform with hood and mask.
Lightweight Bamboo Bokken With Scabbard

Most iaito and shinken swords possess something called a Kurigata, which is a small knob on the outside of the scabbard (or saya). Attached to the kurigata is a robe called a sageo. The kurigata stops the saya from slipping through the belt, while tying the sageo helps ensure you don't lose it during maneuvers.

This particular bokken does not contain those things as it is more for storage and practice, therefore you will have a more difficult time keeping it in place during physical activity.

Answer to: What is the difference between a Judo and Karate Gi?
100% Cotton Single Weave Judo Gi

Hi Mcken. Judo and karate gi actually have a couple of important differences that derive from their primary functions.

Judo, as a sport, requires a lot of pulling, tugging, and gripping. As such, the fabric of the judo gi top is more cloth like and is very thick. The seams of a judo gi tend to be very reinforced because those are the areas that tear first. In addition, judo gi tops do not possess tie strings on the inside; the point being that tie strings would very quickly get torn off during randori.

Karate gi tend to be snappier and a bit stiffer because karateka desire snap and feedback during techniques. Often snap is used to gauge the kime (or focus) of punches and kicks. Karate gi do contain ties on the inside in order to keep them in place as there is less concern for repeated grappling.

Answer to: How is this installed I have an apartment and Im not sure if this would work
EZ Lock Pro Swivel

This swivel is isntalled by screwing it into a platform (like this one - bx-sb-23) which you need to make sure is secured safely to support beams in your wall. Seeing as how you are in an apartment, you'll want to make sure you have permission to drill, and that the wall you are using is not a common wall (which would be very noisy for your neighbors).

You also have the option of getting a free standing bag stand like this - bx-hv-90 which may be more apartment friendly (although like I said, you'll have to check on that).

Hi Rizzo. This bo will provide some vibration to disperse impact, but not a lot. Tapered bo's and bo's made of softer wood (like rattan) may be what you're looking for if you have a particular need to avoid impact.

When it comes to bo training, your body will get some bumps and bruises as it acclimates to the impacts. You'll eventually get used to it though and the vibration will be less of a need.

9" x 6" Professional Super Fast Speed Bags -- Sonic

Hi Scoobie. I think I know what you mean in terms of the vibrating and wiggling. In order to combat that, some people like to place sand bags both on top of the speed bag platform and down on the legs of the stand itself. For the legs you could even place something heavier. This tends to dampen that vibration. Perhaps give that a try, and if it's still no go, then send it on back.

Answer to: i would like 2 know wats the difference between buying a proper bo than buying a broom handle for $5 . . .
Tapered Hardwood Bo

Valid question self teacher. A broom handle could certainly be used like a bo in a pinch. But there are a few things that separate the two when it comes to real practice.

First, a broom handle generally has one rounded edge on the top and one edge that is either grooved or spiraled to accommodate a broom head. The difference in sides can be distracting and annoying during practice. Second, some bo's (like the one featured on this page) have tapered edges which create a center of gravity in the bo toward the middle. This can be valuable for spinning techniques. Third, the wood in broom handles is not as carefully tested as that in bo's because broom handles are not being considered for extensive use and abuse.

is can he use a black uniform?
100% Cotton 6oz. Karate Uniform -- Black

Hey Eric. There is no standard for that sort of thing. You'll have to ask the school instructor when and if black is acceptable. Some schools start with black, others reserve it for black belt students. You can never be sure.

1" Thick Pine Breaking Boards

If you have very green boards that need some moisture removed, consider baking them at about 250 degrees for 8 hours.

keep a close eye on them though, you don't want any incidences.

Also please keep in mind that practitioners and tournament directors could consider this cheating by compromising the integrity of the wood.

Answer to: I just recently bought the 18inch size of this tonfa and I was wondering if I made a mistake. I . . .
Natural Square Tonfa

Hi Nick - no the grips generally get a bit larger as you go up in size. The makers of the tonfa try to figure out what general hand size goes along with arm length, but when all is said and done it is still just a guesstimation on their part to accommodate as many customers as possible.

A good tonfa grip should be roughly the same width as your hand. You want the hand to be flush against the top, with the bottom of the hand just grazing where the handle begins to flare out into the 'bottom knob', so to speak.

Answer to: hi .. the measure of the sai is done how? is complete or is only starting the trifurcation to the . . .
Black Sais

Hi gcrolo. When measuring a sai you take the whole length, from handle to tip. A great way to go about it is by holding someone else's sair folded inward, and seeing if the blade comes down to the tip of your elbow. If it covers your forearm, it is a good length. Too short or long from that point can be problematic.

Answer to: Does either sand or water create more weight in the base or is it the same either way?
Wavemaster

Generally speaking sand will create more weight for you. It is also less prone to swishing back and forth as you hit the bag. That being said, water is much more convenient in the fill-up/dump-out process. So be sure to consider both of those factors!

Comment on: Be carefull of the virbage when you order
"I Am A Martial Artist" T-shirt

Hi rharris. I'm thinking you are referring to this line in the above product: "Want it by Monday, June 21? Order by 4 PM EST on Thursday, June 17 and choose 2nd Day Air."

This line serves the purpose of helping people decide which shipping option they need in order to receive a product by their deadline. It is actually the same tactic that Amazon.com uses, and neither of us suggest that such shipping is included in the product price.

I'm sorry there was confusion about that, but it certainly was not intentional false advertising on our part. We will continue to monitor feedback regarding that information and if customers continue to find it confusing or misleading we will rethink our approach.

Our goal is to serve visitors as best we can - and hopefully this experience hasn't deterred you from continuing business with us!

Answer to: what form of martial arts uses a jo
Jo Staff

Hi Paul. Jo is a predominantly Japanese weapon. It is often associated with classical sword styles such as Shinto Muso Ryu. The jo was originally developed as a response to seemingly indomitable sword arts, which is why it is always a shade longer than the standard katana.

The Okinawans were also known to use a short bo called a hanbo, which is similar to a jo.
