Hey Jimmy - tapered bos are generally considered better for spinning. The taper makes the ends light and places the center of gravity more dominantly in the middle. Non-tapered bos are considered better for application and bunkai (meaning they can take better beatings because they are thicker). Of course, that is also relevant to wood type. If you want something specific for competitions, taper might be the way to go. If you intend to pursue bunkai and kobudo kumite, go with non-taper.

Hey Money - this bo is designed for performance and practice. Ash is a light wood and the taper makes it even lighter. However, this bo will not stand up to repeated abuse through hard contact. You could use it for protection, but it is not ideal for that.

I will have to agree that with any semi-regular use the fans do not hold up well. The ribs come unglued from the fabric....the metal pin that holds them together will loosen.... The fabric starts to fray. That's why in the school where I use them - I recommend to my team to have one pair for practice and one pair for ''Performance'' time. The fans are a great price however, and I have bought several pairs here and have referred people here to buy them. I just wish they held up better.

Not only does the sword look good, but it is solid. I can't see anything happening to it through standard practice. I would not strike another weapon with it, due to its thin blade, but that isn't an issue since its a tai chi sword. It should never more than glance another weapon anyway. This is a graceful weapon, not a basher.

Wears Down with Use
This is a decent fan for practice, but I would not use it in a real combat situation for fear of it breaking. The bamboo is held by a tiny peg that feels like it may pop open after extended use. It is also much lighter than an actual fighting fan. The nylon fabric comes loose after a while as well. Overall good, but you'll be buying another one in a half year.

Only downside is after many uses, the metal that holds the ribs together becomes loose (I tried tightening it with vise). Too bad these don't come in other colors than red and black.
