Yes these can tolerate contact. Have a little wood glue handy in case the handle rattles a bit loose.

Broken

This was my first pair of tonfa, and I began my training with them. Within about 2 weeks one of the handles became loose, and then shortly after completely came out, slightly shattered. I wasn't even making contact with anything. It apparently couldn't hold the wear of spinning the tonfa. Permalink

Size of handle grip.

I just recently bought the 18inch size of this tonfa and I was wondering if I made a mistake. I am about 5'8 and my finger to elbow is about the 18inch length and my main purpose is to use them for sparring but the grip seems small. Are all the grips the same size for all the lengths of the tonfa? Permalink

Hi Nick - no the grips generally get a bit larger as you go up in size. The makers of the tonfa try to figure out what general hand size goes along with arm length, but when all is said and done it is still just a guesstimation on their part to accommodate as many customers as possible.

A good tonfa grip should be roughly the same width as your hand. You want the hand to be flush against the top, with the bottom of the hand just grazing where the handle begins to flare out into the 'bottom knob', so to speak.

Chad - if your primary intention for these tonfa is demonstration, go with the 19.5" model. It will be easier for you to spin and handle. If your intention is to use these for bunkai and sparring/application purposes in additon to kata, then go with the 21". A little more length will give you a combative advantage.

was wondering still being confused about these and never had one before thinking about buying one, but does the tip that u hold on to spin or do u losen ur grip to make it spin?? just wondering plz answer. Permalink

Hey Sonic. The handle does not actually spin. Any spinning motion is done by loosening your grip and allowing the whole unit to slide around in your hand. If the handle does spin, that means it isn't glued or attached properly and should not be used.

I am a person who loves the tonfa, and I have four pairs, some of which I have altered to suit my needs. My problem with a lot of tonfa is that the hand grips are designed for a person with larger hands. This pair fits me like it was a made-to-measure pair, giving me the control I need for figure 8's. I already have a pair of light-weight competition tonfa, and I was unsatisfied with them. The additional weight is what I really needed for Tonfa Kyono Kata. For the first time I can say that just using this pair makes my form look better. One must still practice regularly, and for me, having this pair makes practice more fun. Permalink
