Great Starter Set

I purchased the 19" for my 11 year old son and wife. The handles on the 19" are sized down for a smaller hand. (unlike some other brands I researched) They are came unfinished so no sanding is required. These are very sturdy and well made. For the money you cannot beat them.

Handle Length

How long is the handle? Not the whole handle but the grip space (under the cap thing on the handle and above the main part of the tonfa).

GREAT!!!!!

I received my tonfa impressively fast, but far more impressive was the quality! I had purchased a tapered set elsewhere for my wife, which were good, but these squared ones are massive and intimidating!!! Not only that, they seem to be made in the old Okinawan style with wooden pegs holding in the handle, unlike almost all of the tapered sets I'd found on any site!

great for sparring

These are fairly hefty, and hold up really well to the cane and bokken I've been sparring against. once the finish has been sanded off of the handle, they spin quite well, and the bare wood is actually quite nice looking. I was surprised to find that the handle is properly held in by dowels instead of just glue. mine has a small chip that i may just sand off, but that is really my only complaint. also - to get the sticker residue off just don't use water - rub it to build of fiction and it will bead up and come off easily.

I just got these tonfa and they're great. I do have a few nitpicks though. The finish job was incomplete, and it came with a sticker on one that left residue. The only real problem, however, is that it is very difficult to spin these. They aren't balanced very well, and the handles are on at a slight angle to the main piece. These aren't the right tonfa if you want to perform a Kata, but they seem great for sparring, and since that's what I bought them for, I am very happy with them.

I think these square tonfa are a good choice. They are made of durable hardwood and can take some punishment. If at any point the handles start to wobble on you, just squeeze in some wood glue, clamp it in place, and you'll be good to go the next day.

Yes these can tolerate contact. Have a little wood glue handy in case the handle rattles a bit loose.

Broken

This was my first pair of tonfa, and I began my training with them. Within about 2 weeks one of the handles became loose, and then shortly after completely came out, slightly shattered. I wasn't even making contact with anything. It apparently couldn't hold the wear of spinning the tonfa.

Hi Dragon. If you contact customercare@karatedepot.com we should be able to arrange a replacement pair for you. It's a shame yours broke so soon!

Size of handle grip.

I just recently bought the 18inch size of this tonfa and I was wondering if I made a mistake. I am about 5'8 and my finger to elbow is about the 18inch length and my main purpose is to use them for sparring but the grip seems small. Are all the grips the same size for all the lengths of the tonfa?

Hi Nick - no the grips generally get a bit larger as you go up in size. The makers of the tonfa try to figure out what general hand size goes along with arm length, but when all is said and done it is still just a guesstimation on their part to accommodate as many customers as possible.

A good tonfa grip should be roughly the same width as your hand. You want the hand to be flush against the top, with the bottom of the hand just grazing where the handle begins to flare out into the 'bottom knob', so to speak.

What size should I get

I got about a 20 inch arm from FINGERTIP TO ELBOW what size Tonfa should i get. Would the 21 be the best?

Chad - if your primary intention for these tonfa is demonstration, go with the 19.5" model. It will be easier for you to spin and handle. If your intention is to use these for bunkai and sparring/application purposes in additon to kata, then go with the 21". A little more length will give you a combative advantage.

Hey Sonic. The handle does not actually spin. Any spinning motion is done by loosening your grip and allowing the whole unit to slide around in your hand. If the handle does spin, that means it isn't glued or attached properly and should not be used.

I am a person who loves the tonfa, and I have four pairs, some of which I have altered to suit my needs. My problem with a lot of tonfa is that the hand grips are designed for a person with larger hands. This pair fits me like it was a made-to-measure pair, giving me the control I need for figure 8's. I already have a pair of light-weight competition tonfa, and I was unsatisfied with them. The additional weight is what I really needed for Tonfa Kyono Kata. For the first time I can say that just using this pair makes my form look better. One must still practice regularly, and for me, having this pair makes practice more fun.
