Appropriate Gear

I am looking to get my daughter started in sparring, but the instructor at her Karate school stated that they only provided Macho and Century, which they say is an insurance thing. Their prices are well over $100, and I really do not care if their logo is on it or not. I am looking for value along with safety. Is the Macho Warrior Sparring gear set acceptable to use in any Dojo? I will be bringing a screen print of this to show them, and see what they say.

Hi elsdd. The Macho sparring gear you would get from the dojo is the same as you would get here, assuming you line up the model correctly (there are slight differences between dyna and warrior, for example). That being said, every Macho model is safe and generally considered Dojo acceptable. They may require you to have sparring gear with the dojo logo on it, but that is generally seen as a money making tactic. We aren't judging one way or another, just stating the primary purpose.

Not good information

I ordered the Macho sparring set for my two sons and the Sensei told me they cannot be used at all. My sons are studying Goyu Karate and I just spent over $140 worth of paper weights. They are not rated for USAK and cannot be used in DOJO or in Tournaments. Waste of time and Money!!!

Hi karatedad. Sorry this didn't work out for you! It's quite unusual that this sparring gear wasn't appropriate for your dojo as it is fairly standard design. I'm guessing you haven't used the sparring gear, so please feel free to reach out to us at csupport@karatedepot.com with your receipt email from the purchase. We'll arrange a refund or exchange for you.

great gear!

We've been using this set for about 18-mths. My second daughter has inherited it now. It's time to get my oldest a new set. Really bummed that in the 18-mths or so the price has gone up $20!!

My 9 year old son has been using this set for a year. The gear is holding together very well, though he's not the most aggressive martial artist.

Purchased this kit... size was perfect.. but foot straps wear out before my kid outgrew them. I guess the old saying is you get what you pay for.
Would not get this brand again!

Works good

The hands and head gear work great. The pads for my foot have a tendency to shift sometimes. Usually during a hard kick, but not enough to stop my from fighting, just a bother.

Taekwondo Sparring Gear

Is the sparring gear sold here acceptable for students by ATA? The gear at their local school is $225, and I have 3 sons to buy for... pricy!

Yes - there is no difference between ATA equipment and this gear. Most of the time they buy this gear in bulk and simply apply their own logo to it.

Size question

Hi my son feet measurement is 6 7/8" or size child size 11 and 2/5" for the hand.
1) Would the child small be too large and get in his way for kink gear? There are some color that has x-small listed as an option, what is the size range for those as it's not listed in the sizing chart
2) Should I go with the medium punch gear or it would not be comfortable and not fit properly
by: yeong

The child size x-small would be a good choice for the foot pads. As for the hand gear, I think a child size small would do.

is this gear good for tang soo do if so when would u find it neccisarry to get sparring gear(white belt, yellow belt, etc.)

Hi beginner. Yes this gear is good for Tang Soo Do sparring unless your school requires something specific, like tournament style chest guards: pr-ch-08.

The time frame for getting gear is largely affected by your specific school as well, although in general if your school spars I recommend getting gear by yellow belt.

My son is three and a half. When I measure his head, it is 20.5 inches which translates to a size Medium for the Dyna headgear. Is that right? I don't want to get the wrong size; he's really excited about it.

Medium is probably a fine way to go at 20.5 inches. Think of it this way, even if there is some extra space he will grow into it very shortly.

If you go with the medium and it's just too big let us know, we'll swap you for a smaller size.

Sparring gear brands

My tkd school sells Century gear and it's expensive compared to the gear on this site. Why is Century so much more? Also how long will sparring gear generally last? What is the quality difference between manufacturers? Thanks

Schools mark up the gear they sell a lot.

There is no difference in quality between the makers. They both use the same dipped foam method and general design. As topout mentioned, schools do sometimes mark up the equipment for a wide variety of reasons, but with the increase in online shopping technology it is now easy for individuals to order their own gear.

It's hard to predict how long your gear will last as it depends on how often you use it, and how hard. Expect a good couple of years though.

Wow... I know one school where they make you buy from them - saying it's the special "ATA approved" gear.... and the when it arrives - its the same Macho stuff everyone else is selling at half price. What a rip-off.

I like Karate Depot prices.

My son and I bought two of this set for our sparring needs (red for me, black for him). The nice thing is thay you can mix the colors. We spar 2-3 time a week on average. One of my son's foot gear has a tear but this is after 2 years of use. We have both been pleased with the quality of the gear and the price cannot be beat. Even our instructors were impressed with the prices on this site. Our order came faster than expected which was helpful. The only problem now is that my son need XXL feet which are not available unless you buy them seperately.

Breaking Bones

If you're wearing the headgear and sparring gloves, can you still break someones nose/teeth/jaw/cheekbone?

Hey d3. Yes you can still break people's jaw, nose, etc when these pads are worn. However, they do help prevent those things. Also please note that it is still possible to get concussion while wearing pads, so safety and control are still important.

Does the sizing seem to follow your sizing charts truly?

I find it odd that my daughter sizes for a medium head gear, a small kick and a child large punch. she's a very petite 4.5 year old! if a size is not right are the pieces exchangeable?
by: melinda
7/22/2010 2:06:48 PM

The charts are reliable for getting the general size you would need to order. You might go with the medium kick to give her a little room to grow into it.

Also yes - you can exchange any piece that does not work to your satisfaction.

Boxing vs. Sparring

I'm just wondering what the difference would be if I got sparring gloves vs. boxing gloves.
by: d3r1v4t1v3

Boxing gloves are designed for high impact protection over repeated use, especially when the opponent does not have any protective gear on. Boxing gloves are generally higher in quality and last longer, hence the higher price per pair.

Sparring gloves on the other hand allow for grappling and some open hand techniques that come along with martial arts training. They are generally used in conjunction with other pads like headgear.

I've been impressed with how well this gear seems to compare against other brands- the fit/feel of the headgear is some of the best and most comfortable. My only "complaint" is with the fingertip loops on the punches... some brands, IMHO, have a better system. The pinky and index finger basically float because there is only a slight tab of soft pliable material that isn't capable of holding them tight together with the other fingers.

Depends on the tournament. I've been in many of the "open" and invitationals and if they say that they require "foam dipped" then this should do just fine.

well i ordered the warrior gear from her last week but i was wondering if this gear would be better cuz the warrior gear has a ton o padding over everything i like the padding for the head but the gloves and the kicks feel like they have an excessive amount of padding and they feel really constricting i was wondering if these would be more conformable and i would be able to move around better in them or would the lighting gear be better

Hey Amsterdam - I can tell you from personal experience (I've used the dyna set for years now) that this allows for good mobility. There isn't anything excessive about this set, but it still provides good padding. That being said, any kind of sparring gear is going to feel a bit restrictive until you get used to it and break it in.

Poor Management

I am really excited about recieving the equipment for my son. The price is awesome compared to other companies. However, I paid extra on shipping to recieve this in 7 days and it has already been 10. I called to check on it to find that it is on back order and no one had notified me! I had the sales rep. change the color I ordered so that the product can ship right away, however, the company refuses to change my shipment to overnight. I will still be waiting another 5 days!

have used macho for years

This is the sparring gear I use on a full time basis and am really happy with it. The headgear fits great and accommodates the ears really well. The straps on the hands and feet have yet to show signs of wear and I've used them for almost 2 years.

I moved to New Zealand from the UK last year and wanted to get back in to Tae Kwon Do so needed some new kit. I have bought this along with a new number of other products, all of which have been great.

I have had no problems with this set and i am 17 stone. Its comfortable, gives good protection although i think the kickers are a little on the small size. I think this is a GREAT set and easly worth the money. Don't forget i had to pay NZ$50 for shipping and i still think its well worth it.

Great value, great gear!

I had originally bought this set primarily for the gloves and foot gaurds, meaning that the helmet wasn't a necessity. It turns out that I saved myself a good $30 if I had ordered just those two things from my school! This is really a great deal, and the gear itself is very well made. I would really reccomend this set if you're looking to save some cash without having to compromise quality.

Can't beat the quality for the price...

While my school would prefer I spent over a hundred dollars on a set with their logo, just couldn't afford that. This is a good set made by a quality company. l've used mine several times, very comfortable (the helmets are always hot), if you don't need a faceplate on your helmet this is a great value for the money.

Poor management/misleading web site

When I ordered the set, I checked the "Availability" of the set. It said "Ships immediately". To me, that means they have it in stock and will "ship immediately". So I paid the extra for 2 day shipping. When I checked the status at the web site, it said the head gear was on back order. I called (talked to Abbey) and she said, 1. it can take up to 48 hrs for an on-line order just to to reach their system (which actually means, 2 day shipping is not likely). 2. The head gear is on back order for 3 weeks. 3. She did refund the extra I paid for shipping. They have a LONG WAY to go to be as efficient and honest as other on line business web sites...
