What to Expect From a Student Gi

This video explores what exactly you'll get when you first put on a student gi. First time martial artists are often surprised by the weight, form, and function of a gi and how different it can be from regular western clothing.

Discussed are weight differences between 8 ounce (light weight) and 14 ounce (heavy weight), as well as pros and cons of both uniform types.

An Excellent Buy!

This black Macho Karate Uniform is sweet! I bought a size 7 due to me weighing 258-260, although I am about 6.0'-6.1' tall. This uniform fits like a champ! It feels very loose and good. I am glad I decided to buy this uniform.

Black Student Karate Uniform

The uniform is darker than the product picture and is truly Black and not faded. For those just starting and do not know what the different weights of cloth are, this is very light, and not much thicker than a T-Shirt. When using the size chart, disregard the weight information and just use the height chart. A size 6 is definitely too long in the pants inseam for a 5' 11'' person that weighs 230. If you wash it in Hot Water this uniform will shrink. I intentionally shrunk my pants and got the length down to a good fit for me. The inseam was about 3'' too long prior to shrinking. But if you don't want it to shrink, do not use hot water!

Good construction. Solid seams.

Size 00

I bought my granddaughter the kids starter Gi in a size 00 and it is great! Now she wants a black Gi and it doesn't look like you have it in that size even in the 7 oz Student Karate Uniform. Do you plan to have any in the near future?

Replacement Gi

I bought this to replace an older gi my son was wearing. It was a hand-me down from a cousin and was a bit ragged. I was a bit nervous, as I had ordered a gi through his school and the pants were way too long. His sensei said the brand received was not the normal brand from that company. I ordered the same size and the Macho gi fit him nicely. It seems a nice gi for a boy that will probably grow out of it a long time before it wears out.

Runs Small, Otherwise Good

At first, the material is a bit stiff. Found that size is a bit small. We ordered one size up (big), but arms are short & pants aren't overlong.

Sizing/Tailoring question

It has been a while since I have had to buy a uniform, I wear a size 5. I know that the century student uniforms came unhemmed and had an extra foot it seemed on the legs. I am wondering if the macho uniforms come the same way. It is fine if they do I will be tailoring it anyways. Also my middle son is a little bit of a stick at 4'11" with a 25" waist, somewhere around 70 lbs at age 11. Do you think the 0 or 1 would be better?

Macho uniforms don't have quite that much length in the pants, but in general you can expect to have some extra length. I think you could go with 5 again, especially with the ability to tailor it a bit. As for your son, I think going with the 1 would your best bet.

How do these fit?

I'm 6'4" and about 275-280 lbs, 40" waist.
My wife is 4'11 and about 125-130 lbs. She is a size 4 petite women.

I was looking at a size 7 for me and a size 2 for her. Would those work and give us plenty of room and comfort?

Size info...

I am 6'6" and I weigh 360 lbs; however, I carry it well. I measure 56" at the waist, and I wear 2x sizes in sweats, etc. I usually find the size 2x fits well, but is usually short; however, with a gi I do not mind, since shorter pants will work, but I want to ensure that the jacket will fit comfortably. I am wondering if a size 7, or 8 will be appropriate.

Hi Granny. No a size 3 will not be too big or long. In fact, the size 3 will be a form fit. If you suspect they will hit another growth spurt in the near future, you could go size 4 and cuff the pant legs and sleeves.

For your son, a size 1 would be the perfect fit now. If you are expecting a growth spurt, go size 2.

For you, I think a size 5 would fit snugly, size 6 with some extra space.

Great Student Uniform

Hi! I just ordered this uniform for my 6 year old son. He just loves it, I previously bought one a few months ago but needed to buy another one to have an extra pair of pants. They are very durably made, have washed the first pair a number of times and they still looklike when I first bought them. The shipping I just can't praise enough! Karate Depot is awesome and fast!!! Thanks so much!!

Great Starter uniform

I was worried that the material would be too thin and lightweight, but I was pleasently surprised to find that they are sturdy and of good quality. I purchased 2 of them, and my boys (8&9) would wear them daily if i would let them. Fast shipping and great business, I'll be back. Just a note: I purchased size 1 for 46in. 9year old. fits perfect now, but i havent washed it yet.

Black Karate Pants

What would be the best karate pant size for a man 6'3" / 180lbs (thin) and 35" waist? Is there a brand or style that isn't so baggy for a tall thin guy? I got a size #7, but I could easily fit two of me in them. I was worried that a #6 would be too short (I hate too short), but now I'm concerned that they will still be sized for a person MUCH larger than me. Any suggestions? Thanks.
by: njoyzrd

Njoyzrd - I wrestle with this problem myself. I think a size #6 is probably going to be your best bet. I don't suspect it will be too short, and while it will still be a bit baggy going down to a size 5 might start running that risk of shortness.

I don't know of any brands that cut their uniforms slimmer, but I will post here again if I do uncover something like that.

Worried about size...

Hi, I hope someone can help. I am nearly 5'9" and weigh 145lbs. I don't want to end up with a baggy uniform and prefer it to stay on the snug side. I read the following:

#3 5' 1"-5' 4" Under 160 lbs. 30"-42"
#4 5' 5"-5' 8" Under 190 lbs. 31"-45"

Since #4 is for someone up to 189 lbs, would a #3 uniform be better off for me? My waist size is also 31. Aside from the height specifications, #3 seems to be a better match but I am curious if the inseam of #3 will be ok.

Thanks a lot in advance.

This is actually a matter that differs on a school-to-school level. You will have to check with your instructor to find out what the general protocol is for you school. White uniforms are almost always acceptable though.

Very Good for price!

So far these have been very good uniforms. I have not taught these students to throw yet so I do not know how they will hold up under that kind of abuse, but for all basic moves they work great. Great value for new students. A little stiff at first, but after only 2 washes they are soft and flexible, and no shrinkage! Sizing chart was very accurate. Will buy more of this kind when the time comes. KD is a great company with excellent customer service and fast shipping as well!!!

Very nice light uniform and great price. Perfect for anyone who is not going to get extremely physical in the uniform such as grappling and other things that may cause a lot of abuse to the uniform. Also is great for anyone just starting martial arts or that is on a bit of a budget.

I bought this product about 3 years ago for my 5 year old son. He attends tae kwon do at least 3 times a week. He is still wearing the same uniform and it looks great still. The color has withheld very well and as active as a young boy can be, the uniform has kept it's durability! If only they could make school uniforms this good.
